Twitter can be a difficult social media platform to understand. It appears at first look, to be dedicated to short text message type status updates. Who would be interested in that, you may well ask. But used in the correct way Twitter can be an invaluable networking tool. Twitter is about the present, what is going on right now, the current trends of what people are talking about. You should add your company’s voice to this crowd to show that you are in the present and your website is important.
If you delve beneath the surface of twitter, there are networks of people following other people or businesses that they interested in. There are networks of people who have a similar interest or product, and there are of course networks of friends. Twitter allows you as a business to network with your customers, share links about your products or company news and also show an interest in what your customers are interested in.
By searching for a topic in Twitter you can find the most recent links about this topic that have just been posted by other companies. The media industry use Twitter as tool to find relevant stories and up to the minute breaking news. You as a business can add to this fresh information by ‘tweeting’ your own news about your company or products with links back to your website. Your customers who are interested in getting this information as soon as you post it will follow you. You in return can follow them back, or you can follow other companies providing similar information that you can then ‘retweet’ to inform your own followers. Getting these extra links back to your website will also help to increase your ranking in the search engine results.
Networking works in Twitter by ‘following’ people and businesses. Take some time to find out who your own customers follow, where they hang out and interact with those groups, follow them and reply to messages. Follow people or businesses who you would like as customers and they will get an alert saying you are a new follower. They will then look at your profile to find out who you are. If your profile is well written they may become a follower, find their way to your website and become a customer.
Using Twitter and linking back to your website or blog can bring extra traffic to your website, and so extra sales. It also gives you a voice and you can become an expert in your field with a loyal following who are interested in what you have to say.
